  • DESCRIPTION: This mezzotint, engraved by Charles Turner after a pastel study by John Downman, depicts Sir Samuel Hood, K.B., K.S.F. (1762–1814), in full-dress uniform. Hood, who lost his right arm during the action of 25 September 1806 against a French frigate squadron, is adorned with the Nile medal, the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, and the neck ribbon and decoration of the Sicilian Order of St. Ferdinand and of Merit. His empty sleeve, pinned neatly to his waist, serves as a poignant symbol of his sacrifice and dedication to service. In the background, a fringed curtain drawn back to the left reveals a view of a ship at sea, emphasizing his enduring naval legacy. <br><br> Beneath the image, the title reads “Sir Samuel Hood, K.B.
