• DESCRIPTION: Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier, a French aviation pioneer, and Pierre Romain were killed in a hot air balloon crash while trying to cross the English Channel in 1785. Rozier's designs were later used to create the modern day Roziere balloons - a type hybrid balloon that uses both hydrogen and hot air.
