  • DESCRIPTION: This lithograph depicts Dr. S. S. Guttentag, “Med. et Chir. Doctor,” drawn from life by Emilie Mosevius, rendered on stone by Valentin Schertle, and printed by H. Delius. Shown with a dignified presence and finely observed facial detail, the portrait reflects the authority and esteem associated with a physician and surgeon of his rank. Although little is known about Dr. Guttentag’s life, his title and the formality of the presentation indicate a figure of distinction within 19th-century German medical circles.
