  • DESCRIPTION: Grave par Monsaldi. Edward Jenner (1749 - 1823) is most famous for creating the smallpox vaccine in 1796. Having grown up in the countryside, Jenner had heard stories of how milkmaids who suffered cowpox never contracted smallpox, and used the theory to test inoculations on several local children, including his own infant son, by placing the pus from cowpox into an incision on their arms. Despite its success Jenner was met with great ridicule. The concept of placing material from a diseased animal into another human being disgusted people, but with time the advantages for doing so caught on and one of the greatest killers of the age took a steady decline.
