DESCRIPTION: Drawn by Edward Kaiser, this portrait depicts Carl Damian von Schroff (1802–1887), an Austrian physician and pharmacologist who served as professor of general pathology and pharmacology at the University of Vienna from 1850. A leading figure in medical education, he founded the university’s pharmacological institute, served as dean in 1850–51, and was rector in 1856–57. Schroff authored more than 140 works, including influential textbooks in pharmacology and pharmacognosy, and was noted for his advocacy of humane treatments in psychiatric care, promoting therapeutic activities such as music and theater for patients.
