DESCRIPTION: This portrait presents Richard Temple, M.D., S.L.M.S., painted by William Owen and engraved by John Young, engraver to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. Temple was born in Malton, Yorkshire, in 1759 and pursued his medical studies at the University of Edinburgh before taking his M.D. at the University of Leyden on 8 October 1791. The following year he was admitted as a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in London. In 1792 he published The Practice of Physic, a substantial work aimed at young practitioners that provided a concise exposition of the symptoms, causes, and treatments of diseases, accompanied by a comprehensive index of disorders and medicines. By 1802 he was appointed physician to the Marylebone Dispensary, where he treated patients from London’s poorer districts, and he continued to practice in the capital for the remainder of his career. Temple was known for his clear, methodical approach to clinical medicine, his commitment to public health through dispensary work, and his ability to synthesize contemporary medical knowledge into practical guidance for practitioners. He remained an active and respected figure in London’s medical community until his death on 14 May 1826.
