DESCRIPTION: This lithograph portrays Robert Edmond Grant (1793–1874), an English physician who left medical practice to pursue the study of marine invertebrates. A pioneering figure in comparative anatomy and an early advocate of evolutionary theory, Grant’s ideas on the unity and development of life are believed to have influenced the young Charles Darwin during their acquaintance in Edinburgh. In 1827 he became the first Professor of Comparative Anatomy at University College London, later also serving as Professor of Zoology, positions he held until his death. Over his long career, Grant advanced the scientific study of invertebrates in Britain and championed a materialist, secular approach to science in the Victorian era.
