DESCRIPTION: This lithograph depicts Dr. Theodore Woodward (1788–1840), M.D., Professor of Surgery at the Vermont Academy of Medicine, whose portrait was presented by the Academy’s class of autumn 1836. Born in Hanover, New Hampshire, Woodward studied medicine under the noted educator Nathan Smith and began his practice around 1809 in Castleton, Vermont. In 1818 he helped found the Vermont Academy of Medicine, later affiliated with Middlebury College, and served as a member of its governing body from its inception until his death. He was appointed professor of surgery and obstetrics from 1818 to 1824, later expanding his teaching to include the diseases of women and children, and from 1824 to about 1838 held the chair in surgery, obstetrics, and diseases of women and children. Known for his skill in diagnosis and timely surgical intervention, Woodward was a respected scholar-physician of his era, remaining central to the Academy’s mission until illness forced his retirement shortly before his death.
