  • DESCRIPTION: Engraved by G. Bartolozzi from an original drawing by T. Stothard, Esq. R.A., this portrait depicts John Ferriar (1761–1815), a Scottish-born physician and poet educated at the University of Edinburgh, where he earned his M.D. in 1781. Settling in Manchester, he served as a senior physician at the Manchester Infirmary from 1789 until his death, becoming a leading advocate for public health through the establishment of fever wards, isolation hospitals, and sanitary reforms. A co-founder and first chairman of the Portico Library, Ferriar was also active in the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. His writings include Medical Histories and Reflections, Illustrations of Sterne, and An Essay toward a Theory of Apparitions, the latter exploring scientific explanations for ghostly phenomena.
