DESCRIPTION: This engraving, after a bust by William Behnes, depicts Henry Earle (1789–1838), a distinguished English surgeon. Earle was the son of Sir James Earle, surgeon to King George III, and the grandson of the celebrated anatomist John Hunter by marriage. Educated in London, he built a prominent surgical career at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, where he served as surgeon and lecturer. Renowned for both his operative skill and his teaching, he instructed in anatomy and surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons and published works on surgical technique and medical ethics. From 1835 to 1837 he presided over the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society, reflecting his standing in the profession. Shortly before his death, Queen Victoria appointed him surgeon-extraordinary, a testament to his reputation and service.
