  • DESCRIPTION: Corbutt delin. Sc vend chez J.M. Wilt a Augsbourg. A fine mezzotint portrait of Sir William Howe (1729–1814), as Commander of the British forces in America. Howe is shown in a two third-length standing pose, wearing the star and sash of the Order of the Bath. Howe succeeded Gage as commander of the British forces in the Colonies during the Revolution, serving in this capacity from 1775 to 1778. William Howe’s brother, Richard was an admiral in the British Navy and was Commander in Chief at the American station from 1776-1778.
