DESCRIPTION: This engraving, after a painting by Drummond and engraved by Thomson, depicts William Preston, the influential Scottish author, editor, and Freemason. Educated in Edinburgh, Preston began his career assisting the classical scholar Thomas Ruddiman before moving to London to work under printer William Strahan. Though well-connected in literary circles, Preston is best remembered for his contributions to Freemasonry. Initiated in 1763 into the Lodge of London, he later became Worshipful Master of the Lodge of Antiquity No.1 in 1774. His landmark 1772 work Illustrations of Masonry became a foundational Masonic text, widely published in England, America, and Europe.
