  • DESCRIPTION: Engraved by C. Mottram. Daniel Webster was an American statesman, lawyer, and one of the finest orators the nation has ever seen. Born in Salisbury, New Hampshire on January 18, 1782, he would go on to graduate from Dartmouth College and would later open a legal practice in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In 1812 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives but would leave in 1816 to move to Boston where he successfully argued cases before the Supreme Court. He would return in 1823 and would be elected Senator from Massachusetts in 1827.
