  • DESCRIPTION: Printed on Japanese paper after a painting by Frederic P. Vinton of Boston. Commissioned by S. R. Koehler for "American Art." <br><br> Charles Devens was an American lawyer and jurist. He earned his degree from Harvard and began his career in Massachusetts, but when the Civil War came around he placed his work on hold and joined the Union Army. After the war he returned to Massachusetts where he worked as the Associate Justice for the state's Supreme Court and eventually went on to be the United States Attorney-General under President Hayes.
