  • DESCRIPTION: Hyparere. (a.b.) c.d. Nicipee. e.f. Aretheusa. g.h. Liberia. Plate CCX. Pieter Cramer (1721–c.1779), a Dutch wool merchant and entomologist, assembled a remarkable collection of butterflies and moths that became the basis for one of the most important natural history publications of the 18th century. He hired Gerrit Wartenaar Lambertz to create drawings of his specimens, which were engraved and published in De Uitlandsche Kapellen Voorkomende in de Drie Waereld-Deele Asia, Africa en America… / Papillons Exotiques des Trois parties du Monde: l’Asie, l’Afrique et l’Amerique. Issued between 1775 and 1782, the work introduced readers to exotic Lepidoptera from across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, presented in finely engraved plates with original hand coloring. Plate CCX illustrates several butterflies under the names Hyparere, Nicipee, Aretheusa, and Liberia, arranged in upper and underside views, their intricate wing markings carefully rendered to convey both scientific accuracy and artistic refinement.
