  • DESCRIPTION: Vanilla (a.b.) c.d. Dirce. e.f. Heliodore. Plate CCXII. Pieter Cramer (1721–c.1779), a Dutch wool merchant and entomologist, assembled an extensive collection of butterflies and moths that became the foundation for one of the landmark entomological works of the 18th century. He commissioned Gerrit Wartenaar Lambertz to prepare drawings of his specimens, which were engraved and issued as De Uitlandsche Kapellen Voorkomende in de Drie Waereld-Deele Asia, Africa en America… / Papillons Exotiques des Trois parties du Monde: l’Asie, l’Afrique et l’Amerique. Published between 1775 and 1782, the series presented exotic Lepidoptera in finely detailed engravings with original hand coloring. Plate CCXII depicts butterflies under the names Vanilla, Dirce, and Heliodore, arranged to show both upper and underside views, with careful attention to wing form and pattern. As in the rest of the series, Curtis’s engravings balance artistry and accuracy, preserving a vivid record of the natural history of distant regions.
