DESCRIPTION: From Pieter Cramer’s De Uitlandsche Kapellen…/Papillons Exotiques (1775–1782), this plate depicts Auratus, Martbesia, Vidua, Filia, Pueritia, Neptis, and Nobilitella. Cramer, a Dutch wool merchant and entomologist, commissioned Gerrit Wartenaar Lambertz to render his extensive collection of butterflies and moths in finely detailed drawings, later engraved and hand colored. As one of the earliest illustrated surveys of lepidoptera from Asia, Africa, and the Americas, the series set new standards for scientific precision and artistic quality in 18th-century natural history publishing.
