Pieter Cramer (1721–c.1779), a Dutch wool merchant and entomologist, assembled one of the most important 18th-century collections of butterflies and moths. He engaged Gerrit Wartenaar Lambertz to draw the specimens, which were then engraved and published in De Uitlandsche Kapellen Voorkomende in de Drie Waereld-Deele Asia, Africa en America… / Papillons Exotiques des Trois parties du Monde: l’Asie, l’Afrique et l’Amerique. Issued between 1775 and 1782, this pioneering series introduced European audiences to exotic Lepidoptera from around the globe. Plate V depicts six butterflies identified as Chloe, Gelon, Philanthus, Teleclus, Archytas, and Titea, each carefully engraved and finished with original hand coloring to capture their striking patterns. The plate exemplifies the blend of scientific precision and artistic quality that makes Cramer’s work a cornerstone of entomological illustration.
