  • DESCRIPTION: This engraving originates from Joseph Jakob Plenck’s Icones Plantarum Medicinalium Secundum Systema Linnaei Digestarum, published in Vienna between 1788 and 1812. Devoted to the medicinal properties of European flora, this work documented many species that had never been illustrated previously. The plate depicts the Sicilian Sumac (Rhus Coriaria), a plant historically used for its antioxidant, astringent, and diuretic properties. Created using precise copperplate engraving and finished by hand with watercolor, the work provides a clear anatomical study of the species' leaves and stems. These engravings, characterized by a distinct freshness and simplicity, remain a significant reference for both botanical collectors and historians of medicinal science.
