DESCRIPTION: This lithograph on chine-colle depicts David Henshaw (1791–1852), the 14th United States Secretary of the Navy, during his brief yet impactful tenure under President John Tyler. Born in Leicester, Massachusetts, Henshaw achieved success as a druggist, banker, and politician, serving as a Massachusetts State Senator and Collector of the Port of Boston. As Secretary of the Navy, he addressed shipbuilding issues, improved Navy Yard operations, and is credited with saving the USS Constitution from being scrapped. A leader of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, Henshaw was known for his conservative views and active role in state politics. USS Henshaw (DD-278) was later named in his honor.
