DESCRIPTION: Designed & the figures engraved by C. P. Harrison. Aquatinted by L. Hill Esqr. N. York. <br><br> America places a laurel upon the memorial of DeWitt Clinton. Beside her the bald eagle bows his head. The momument reads, 'Sacred to the Immortal De Witt Clinton / Born 1769. / Died 1828.' On the ground rests a book entitled, 'Hist. of the Grand Canal,' which refers to the Erie Canal. DeWitt began construction of the canal during his time as Governor, despite the heavy opposition it faced. When it opened in 1825 it was considered an engineering marvel and opened the way for faster, cheaper trade and transport.
