  • DESCRIPTION: Engraved by J.C. Armytage, this image depicts Roger Williams being received by the Narragansett after fleeing persecution in Massachusetts. A Puritan minister who arrived in New England in 1631, Williams became a strong advocate for religious freedom and fair dealings with Native Americans. In 1634, facing deportation for his outspoken beliefs, he escaped into the wilderness and found refuge among the Narragansett people. With their support, he later purchased land and founded Providence Plantations in 1636, laying the foundation for the future colony of Rhode Island.
