  • DESCRIPTION: Signed in pencil by the engraver - John W. Evans - lower right. Marked "Frank H. Schell" in the plate. <br><br> "Bloody Angel" refers to the segment of Battle of Spotsylvania Court House fought at Mule Shoe, where the Confederate and Union forces clashed in hand-to-hand combat for nearly 20 hours. Thousands were killed between the two forces. A horrifying total of 30,000 men would be dead or wounded by the time the Battle of Spotsylvania came to a close.<br><br> In this engraving one of the soldiers, standing out among the other on the left, has the semblance of Ulysses S. Grant, who was one of the commanding officers at the battle.
