DESCRIPTION: Signed in the plate. <br><br> J. L. G. Ferris (1863-1930) was a Philadelphia based artist who is best remembered for his series of paintings known as "The Pageant of a Nation" - 78 scenes of important events in American history. Also among his large body of work are several etchings - domestic scenes usually - exhibiting his talent for figurative compositions. This particular plate has a "remarque", a smaller engraving in the print's border, of a spaniel similar to one in the main image. Ferris was the nephew of noted artists Thomas and Peter Moran.
