DESCRIPTION: The "Tammany Ring" was a group of New York City board supervisors appointed and overseen by William "Boss" Tweed, leader of the Democratic Party of New York. Tweed used his position and power to graft millions in illegal gains at the expense of the city. It is estimated that Tweed and his associates siphoned up to $200 million dollars from New York's coffers. It was the press - allegorized here as a classical figure of retribution - who finally brought Tweed down. Harper's Weekly, The New York Times, and editorial cartoons such as this one led to an arrest warrant being issued on October 26, 1871.
