DESCRIPTION: Nineteenth century street sweepers characterized as stereotypes of European immigrants - Italian, German and Irish. Tammany Hall, the home of New York's Democratic party, embraced the poorest of immigrants arriving from Europe - offering them employment, housing, and an opportunity to become citizens. These recent arrivals, in turn, became loyal Democrats - a tradition that held true well into the 20th century.
