DESCRIPTION: With this political cartoon the artist, Thomas Nast, attacks white supremacists. Columbia, the female personification of America, wields her sword - labeled "Constitution of the U.S. Law" - against the Confederate-supporting men in the country. They wave the flag of "White Men's League" as they race into battle against her and the Union. In Columbia's other hand is the balance of justice, labeled "Equal rights to all." She fights to uphold the law of the land, which includes the rights and liberties of freed slaves, one of whom lays on the ground between them, dead. A Confederate solder steps on him as though he were nothing but a stone.
