DESCRIPTION: Oct. 19, 1864. Ride Thro’ the Shenandoah Valley. Union (Gen. Sheridan, Com.) Loss: 5,995 – Confederate (Gen. Early, Com.) Loss: 3,000 & 30 guns. Sheridan’s counterattack against Early’s army was a hard-fought victory, though costly in lives, and marked the last major engagement in the Shenandoah Valley. Between 1884 and 1894, Kurz and Allison published thirty-six chromolithographs of Civil War battles. Their prints, valued for their naïve artistry, are characterized by stylized panoramas of both armies in sweeping “fishbowl” settings. The somewhat rigid treatment of figures lends them a graphic quality reminiscent of earlier Currier & Ives lithographs.
