DESCRIPTION: After a painting by Thomas Le Clear. Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) was the eighteenth President of the United States. Grant brought a military background to the presidency, having served in the Mexican-American War and in the Civil War as Commanding General for the Union Army. During his presidency, Grant supported Reconstruction and promoted African-American citizenship and economic growth. This engraving is based on the large official painting of Grant that hangs in the White House. This print appeared in "The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents".
