DESCRIPTION: Built in 1853 in Greenpoint, New York, the CSS Nashville was originally designed to be a passenger ship. The vessel was commandeered by the Confederate forces during the American Civil War, and was subsequently turned into a warship. The vessel did not see much action, but one of its notable conflicts was against the merchantman Harvey Birch (seen ablaze in this engraving) on November 19, 1861 in the English Channel.
