The Old Print Shop

Christopher Street.

  • ARTIST: Howard Cook

  • MEDIUM: Woodcut,

    DATE: 1928

  • EDITION SIZE: Edition 50. Image size 13 x 9 7/16" (33 x 24 cm).

  • DESCRIPTION: The alternate title "3rd Ave. EL" gives the wrong location. The correct location is West Village, New York City. The station depicted was the Christopher Street Station on the 6th Ave. El.

Wood grain is evident in a proof in collection of Smithsonian American Art Museum. It seems likely that the artist sanded the block to remove the grain for the edition.

Many times it was more convenient for me, with my cumbersome sketching equipment with easel, to take the "El" to my destination, and I always liked watching familiar aspects of the city passing briskly by. The subway, tho faster, always seemed unhealthy and I used to feel claustrophobic and unsafe.
August 4, 1975.
