  • DESCRIPTION: Depicts a locomotive engine and car designed by the well-known locomotive firm of Hinkley and Williams Works of Boston, Mass. A placard on the engine identifies the locomotive as No. 925. According to the Boston Directories, Hinkley and Williams were in partnership from 1861 to 1872. In 1873, the firm became known as the Hinkley Locomotive Works (also known as the Boston Locomotive Works). Date of print based on the years in which the New England Lithographic Company was located at 109 Summer St., Boston. The wood-engraver Samuel S. Kilburn re-worked this image as an engraving. The engraving was used to illustrate advertisements for Hinkley and Williams Works and the Hinkley Locomotive Works in the Boston Directory from 1870 to 1883. Signed on stone lower left of image: S. S. Frizzell.
