A sailor holds the arm of his bride in the office of the Justice of the Peace. Having interrupted the judge during a meal, the groomsman bows down in a placatory manner. The small wedding party stands behind the couple in their finest dress. In the background, a crowd forms at the doorway, including two African-Americans holding a young, crying child. The interior of the office shows a horse-hair trunk overflowing with scattered books and bookcase adorned with a pasted page from an Almanac. Richard Canton Woodville (American, 1825-1855) painted the scene in 1852. The original painting is in the collection of The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.

  • CONDITION: Good condition save for some overall time-toning and a faint mat line. Fine original hand coloring.
