A pleasant view of the island, in the Ohio River, with Parkersburg, West Virginia in the distance. Painted by Henri Lovie after a sketch by Lizzie Forbes. Lovie was a portrait, landscape, and illustrator of Cincinnati. "The island was purchased by Harman Blennerhassett and his wife, the land formerly belonged to George Washington. In 1800, they moved into the house which was over 8000 sq. ft., and well furnished with oriental carpets. Harman conducted scientific experiments, formed an extensive private library, and paid detailed attention to his agricultural fields. The couple became well known for their hospitality, and many travelers down the Ohio River stopped at the Blennerhassett home." 18th-19th Century Subjects , Town Views - United States , Virginia & West Virginia
