DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century perspective of Fort McHenry, captured as an engraving and handcolored to highlight the details.

Fort McHenry, located on Locust Point in Baltimore, Maryland, is a historic American coastal pentagonal bastion fort. Constructed in 1798, it played a pivotal role in the War of 1812, famously defending Baltimore Harbor from a British naval attack on September 13–14, 1814. This successful defense inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry," which, set to the tune of "To Anacreon in Heaven," became "The Star-Spangled Banner," the national anthem of the United States.
