Engraved by James Watson. <BR><BR> Title continues "Created Baron Amherst of Holmesdale in Kent 1776; : Governor of Guernsey; Colonel of the 2 Regiment of Life Guards and Colonel in Chief of the Honourable Privy Council; : General Commanding in Chief the British Troops in England from 1778 to 1782; : And again from January 1793 to February 1795."<br><br> This painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds shows Amherst with the St Lawrence rapids in the background.<br><br> Lord Jeffrey Amherst (1717-1797) was commanding general of British forces in North America during the final battles of the French & Indian war (1754-1763). His victories against the French, capturing the strategic forts at Ticonderoga, Niagara, Quebec, and Montreal helped to acquire Canada for England. He was appointed the Royal Governor of Virginia from 1759 until 1768 but never set foot in the colony.
