Engraved by William Strickland after a painting by Birch. Both artist and engraver were based in Philadelphia in the early 19th century. In the foreground of this idyllic scene is a "Durham" boat, a flat bottomed vessel forty to sixty feet long and capable of carrying up to fifteen tons. A crew of five, one to steer and four to push with iron poles, could maneuver the swift currents of the upper Delaware River. 18th-19th Century Subjects, Town Views - United States, New Jersey
