  • DESCRIPTION: This engraving of Tiberius Caesar, created by Aegidius Sadeler II and published by Marcus Sadeler, is part of the Roman Emperors and Empresses series based on Titian’s 1537–38 portraits for Duke Federigo Gonzaga. Produced between 1586 and 1629, it portrays Tiberius in a half-length profile turned slightly to the left, wearing classical armor that highlights his status as a prominent Roman general, with draped fabric and a staff reinforcing his imperial authority. Born on November 16, 42 BC, Tiberius succeeded Augustus as Rome’s second emperor and ruled from 14 AD to 37 AD. Known for his military achievements, he led successful campaigns in Pannonia, Dalmatia, Raetia, and Germania, securing the Empire’s northern frontiers. This engraving, true to Titian’s original vision, reflects the strength and legacy of Tiberius while evoking the majesty of Rome’s imperial past.
