  • DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century perspective of "First Blow for Liberty," captured as a lithograph printed in color and finished by hand. "Compliments of 'Domestic' Sewing Machine Co." This advertisement features a perspective of "First Blow for Liberty," a tribute to the Patriots of 1775. The image, originally engraved by A. H. Ritchie after a painting by Darley, depicts the minute-men at the Battle of Lexington. the firm for which this imaghe was produced was originally founded in 1861 under the name William A. Mack & Co., it morphed into the Domestic Sewing Machine Co. in 1869. Their 'Domestic' brand sewing machine was popular during its time, enough so that in 1924 it was purchased and made a subsidiary of the White Sewing Machine Company. They continued to manufacture 'Domestic' sewing machines until the 1930s when the Great Depression took its toll.
