DESCRIPTION: Born 3D Month, 19th - Died 2D Month, 27th, 1830.<br><br> A unusual separately issued silhouette profile portrait of this Quaker minister. Elias Hicks was born in Hempstead, Long Island, New York and was a gifted orator with a strong voice and dramatic flair. In his ministry he promoted unorthodox doctrines that led to controversy, which caused the second major schism within the Religious Society of Friends. He broke with the Philadelphia Friends and established a separate Christian Quaker meeting. His followers were called "Hicksites", "Keithians" or "Christian Quakers." Elias Hicks was the older cousin of the painter Edward Hicks.<br><br> John Hopper was the son of the Quaker abolitionist, Isaac T. Hopper who in 1829 moved to New York in order to run a bookstore established by the Hicksite Quakers. This portrait is quite scarce.
