Birds - Plate XV. <br><br> U.S.P.R.R. or the United States Pacific Railroad Expedition and Survey was published in twelve volumes between 1853-1861. The expeditions was funded by the U.S. Government and included artist, scientists and surveyors, whose job was to document the American West and find suitable routes for transcontinental railroad lines. The series documented a wide variety of elements including landscape, wildlife and indigenous tribes.<br><br> Today this bird is known as Swainson's Hawk, but back in the 1850s misidentification led to it being documented as "Buteo Oxypterus."
