DESCRIPTION: This leaf from Montanus’ E Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld describes the walrus, depicted with fore-feet split into five digits, a wide mouth, serrated tail, and fins above the forelimbs. Montanus notes its long body and remarkable tusks, which served not only as weapons but also as tools for climbing rocks along the northern coasts. He records that the males possessed unusual strength, even hardening their organs against stone. Found in great numbers near Newfoundland, Canada, and Acadia, walrusses shared these waters with teeming shoals of cod and turbot, sometimes caught by the hundreds in a single hour. The account presents the walrus as both strange and formidable, a striking creature emblematic of the abundance and mystery that defined Europe’s first encounters with the North Atlantic world.
