DESCRIPTION: This leaf from Montanus’ E Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld recounts the llama, a beast found only in Peru and vital to the people of the Andes. Serving as both pack animal and source of wool, it replaced sheep and other livestock unknown to the region before Spanish arrival. Montanus notes two kinds: the long-haired variety, called pacos, and the shorter-haired, more camel-like form, often white, black, or mottled, known as moromoro. These animals, though steady carriers, sometimes halted for long periods, gazing fixedly at their herders, or collapsed suddenly beneath their loads in a stubborn fit. The pacos in particular were prone to carasche, a contagious skin disease, so severe that the afflicted were buried alive to protect the herd. Both llama and paco appear here as strange yet indispensable creatures, sustaining Andean communities with transport, wool, and clothing.
