The expedition was funded by the U.S. Government and included artist, scientists and surveyors, whose job was to document the American West and find suitable routes for transcontinental railroad lines. The series documented a wide variety of elements including landscape, wildlife and indigenous tribes.<br><br> Key in lower margin notes important features, such as "Cascade Mountains" and "Fall River Plains."
