A portrait of Union General George Gordon Meade is surrounded by two memorial obelisk. At the bottom is the American flag, musical instruments used by the military at the time, swords, cannons and cannon balls.<br><br> George Gordon Meade (1815-1872) was an American military officer and civil engineer who played a critical role in the defeat of Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg. The son of a U.S. naval agent stationed in Spain, Meade was born in Cadiz, Spain on Dec. 31, 1815. He graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1835. Meade fought in a number of wars leading up to the Civil War, where President Lincoln appointed him General of the Army of the Potomac in 1863, replacing General Joseph Hooker. Meade was promoted to Major General in the regular army in 1864.
