  • DESCRIPTION: An embossed tobacco label containing a swastika for good luck. Before the Nazi party rose to power and brought about the genocide of World War II, the swastika was viewed as a positive symbol, literally meaning "well-being" in the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit. The western world fell in love the symbol around the turn of the 20th century and began using it in mass as a symbol of good luck. It was used as architectural design elements, on play cards, advertisements (even by big names such as Coca-Cola) and was utilized by the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. The symbol quickly fell out of fashion when it became associated with hatred and genocide.
