DESCRIPTION: Originally published in 1787, we believe this is a posthumous impression was printed around the time of the centennial celebration of America's independence.

C. Peale del (drawn by Charles Willson Peale). J.T. sculp. (engraved by James Trenchard).

Independence Hall is located at 520 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA. The original structure (seen here) was designed by Edmund Woolley and Andrew Hamilton, and underwent construction between 1732-1753. By the early 1770s, the wooden steeple was noted to be rotten but, likely due to the American Revolutionary War, wasn't removed until 1781 when the rot had advanced to a dangerous level. The building sat without a steeple for several decades until 1828, when William Strickland was hired to restore the lost structure. Rather than remaking the original, however, he combined the steeple and clock-tower into one entity, and had them constructed primarily out of brick.
