Mollhausen,

In the 1850s, amid efforts to find viable shipping routes and facilitate troop transport to Utah during the Mormon War, the U.S. government funded the Colorado Exploring Expedition, also known as the Ives Expedition. Led by Lieutenant Joseph Christmas Ives from December 1857 to 1858, this Corps of Topographical Engineers survey aimed to assess the Colorado River's navigability. Departing from Robinson’s Landing, the expedition traveled on the steamer Explorer north to Fort Yuma, reaching Black Canyon by March. They then sailed back south and undertook an overland journey through the Grand Canyon to Fort Defiance. Accompanied by naturalist John S. Newberry, artist Balduin Möllhausen, and topographer Baron von Egloffstein, the expedition included Mohave chief Irataba as a guide. The mission involved charting the river's course, conducting a hydrographic survey, and collecting geological, natural history, and ethnological specimens.
