DESCRIPTION: In 1853, the U.S. Congress sent survey teams from the Corps of Topographical Engineers to explore potential railway routes from the Mississippi to the Pacific. Accompanied by naturalists and artists documenting the "wild west", including Richard H. Kern, they contributed to the United States Pacific Railroad Surveys. Kern's lithograph "Head of the First Canon of Grand River", produced by Sarony, Major & Knapp in 1855, was part of the official government report that influenced the selection of the transcontinental rail route, marking a significant moment in American history.

The Grand River, originating in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, flowed south and west until it met the Green River in southeastern Utah, where its name changed to the Colorado River. In 1921, U.S. Representative Edward T. Taylor successfully petitioned Congress to rename the Grand River to the Colorado River. This change consolidated the entire waterway under the name "Colorado River," reflecting its origins and significance to Colorado, and securing its historical and geographical identity in American interstate agreements.
