  • DESCRIPTION: The 'Aerial Steam Carriage" was a flying machine patented in 1842 by William Henson and John Stringfellow. Together with Frederick Marriott and D.E. Columbine, they formed the Aerial Transit Company to raise capital for its construction. Unfortunately, the Ariel was incapable of sustained flight since it was powered by a heavy steam engine. This information is depicted in a lithograph by W. Walton, produced by Day & Haghe, lithographers to the Queen.
